Rock crush on Crete hotel facility; tourist dead, child injured UPDATE

Tragedy on Crete: A rock crushed on a small hotel facility in Lasithi, killing one woman, seriously injuring her child.

The tragedy took place in Agia Fotia resort village near to Ierapetra short before Saturday midnight.

According to local media neakriti.gr, a large piece of rock detached, rolled down the slope and crushed on two apartments of the facility.

The apartments collapsed on the 45-year-old woman and her 8-year-old child.

The boy has been reportedly seriously injured and was rushed with an ambulance to the hospital.

The 51-year-od father who was in another part of the apartment saw the whole tragedy unfolding in front of his eyes. He was slightly injured and could be easily freed. He is in shock and has been transferred to hospital as well.

The Fire Service launched a big operation with 50 firefighters and volunteers and 20 engines. The operation lasted 6 hours, state broadcaster ERT reported.

Firefighters could free the child trapped in the wreckage, however, they could only recover the woman dead.

According to media reports, half of the 15-apartment facility has been completely destroyed.

It was reportedly the last night on the island for the family from the Czech Republic. UPDATE: Sunday afternoon, ERT reports that the family was from Slovenia.
