Ministry’s “Easter Basket” at supermarkets angers butchers, breeders

The special ‘Easter Basket’ that offers lower-price traditional Easter food items has been effecτive as of Wednesday, April 5, 2023, the Development Ministry announced.

The “Easter Basket” contains traditional food items such as lamb and goat meat, sweet Easter bread (tsoureki) and Easter chocolate eggs.

The “Easter Basket” is in the same wavelength as the “Lent basket” and seeks to meet the needs of consumers for more economical solutions for the Easter and Easter table.
The “Easter Basket” will be in effect until Holy Saturday, April 15.
Consumers can find the offers at supermarket stores and their websites.

Development and Investments Minister Adonis Georgiadis said that for 89.95% of the goods included in the basket, prices have either dropped or stayed unchanged.

In a Twitter post, the Minister claimed that “despite the initial fears of a big increase this year in the prices of lamb and goat, the target price of 10 euros was achieved by keeping the prices in the “Basket” at last year’s levels.”

According to the lists that the supermarkets have posted so far, based on the data of the Ministry, the prices for lamb start from 9.78 euros per kilo and reach up to 10.90 euros per kilo, while for goat from 9.90 euros per kilo up to 11.40 euros per kilo.

The Minister highlighted the small production in this year but also the big exports made for the Catholic Easter, a week Earlier.

Meanwhile butchers are in outrage rightly saying that “lamb and goat in the Easter Basket turn people to buy the traditional meat from the supermarkets.”

On their part, breeders’ unions and bodies have reportedly issue a joint statement announcing relevant legal actions for the measure.
