Greek Police has arrested ten border guards serving at the Evros border with Turkey in north-eastern Greece for being involved in illegal trafficking of migrants.
The operation of the Department of Internal Affairs of the Hellenic Police in the prefecture of Evros is in progress, with the arrests το have increased from 5 to 10 since Monday morning, local media reported.
Citing information by authorities, local evrosnews.gr website reported that the Department of Internal Affairs of the Police was monitoring the suspects for several months.
Most of the suspects reportedly belonged to the Special Team of the Didymoteicho Border Guard Department, which handled the cases of arrests of illegal immigrants passing through their area of responsibility. I
Some of the arrested suspects had “suddenly” become rich, buying hundreds of acres of fields in their villages, expensive agricultural machinery, but also luxury cars, actions not justified by the salary of a Border Guard.
Most of the suspects were a group and were together for a long time on and off duty.
According to ANT1 TV, the amount of 26,000 was found in the home of one of the suspects who were either turned a blind eye or they facilitate the illegal entrance of the migrants in Greece.
