Corfu hit by heavy thunderstorm disrupting airport operation

A heavy thunderstorm hit the island of Corfu early afternoon Monday causing problems in the electricity system, while heavy lightning disturbed the operation of the  Ioannis Kapodistrias international airport.

Eight flights were not able to land because of the thunderstorm, while three of them had to land at nearby airports.

Areas in the center and periphery of Corfu experienced power cuts.

In Anemomylos on the coastal Garitsa road, a tree fell on the outdoor tables and chairs of a taverna. Neither the owners nor customers were injured. The owner’s wife told media that they managed to remove the customers in the last minute. The local fire service deployed an vehicle to remove the tree branches.
The thunderstorm on the island of the northern Ionian Sea was the first strike by bad weather front called DANIEL, forecast to bring heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms in the country in the next few days.
