Just six months after the elections, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis apparently has realized that there is a major security issue in the county and decided to proceed with a small cabinet reshuffle.
Minister for Citizen Protection Ioannis Oikonomou was replaced by Michalis Chrysochoidis, currently the health minister, who was Minister for Citizen Protection in the first Mitsotakis’ governance (2019-2023).
While Chrysochoidis has been considered as a successful Citizens Protection Minister, his short carreer as Health Minister was limited to frequent announcements about improvements in the sector that, however, were never materialized.
Chrysochoidis is being replaced in the Health Ministry by Labor Minister, Adonis Georgiadis, who held the same post in the Samaras’ cabinet (2013-2014/ 1st bailout). The health sector is crucial as the public system collapses day by day and neo-liberal Mitsotakis aims to bring it down in favor of the private sector. In his first post as Health Minister Georgiadis wanted to introduce a 25-euro entrance fee to patients visiting public hospital and withdrew his idea after strong opposition.
Deputy minister for social issues Domna Michailidou has been upgraded and will now handle the labor portfolio.
The cabinet reshuffle was announced by government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis at 6 p.m. Wednesday, on the 3rd day of 2024.
