Police officers arrested for extortion and bribery

The Internal Affairs Service of the Greek Security Forces arrested two police officers for repeated extortion, bribery of an employee, abuse of power, breach of official confidentiality, dereliction of duty, as well as for breaching arms and drug laws.

The arrests on Sunday morning followed a complaint according to which one of the officers was receiving money from owners of catering businesses as well as from people construction contractors  in order to avoid relevant police checks.

The police officer was reportedly demanding sums of money, while he was also informing the business owners of upcoming inspections by the service unit for which he was working.

In total, his involvement was identified in 2 cases of extortion and bribery, as well as 11 cases of breach of official confidentiality.

The second police officer was involved in acts of extortion and bribery against construction workers. He was on a mounted patrol service, he carried out checks on construction sites and houses where construction works were being carried out, demanding various sums of money from builders or building owners, otherwise he threatened them with arrest. In total, his involvement in 2 cases of extortion and bribery was identified.

In the searches carried out at the homes of the arrested were found and confiscated:

32,240 euros in cash, 4 mobile phones, 2 double-barreled and 1 single-barreled shotguns,numerous cartridges, of various calibers, guns and shotguns, a hunting knife, 11.4 grams of raw cannabis as well as a metal grater with cannabis residues.

The arrested police officers who were serving in Attica, were taken to the competent prosecuting authority.

Last week, another police officer was arrested in Athens. He was found to have illegally taken several weapons from the station he was serving.
