Greece launches job program for unemployed aged 55-74 in healthcare

Greece’s Public Employment Service (DYPA) has launched a subsidy program to open up 1,300 jobs for long-term unemployed people aged 55-74, the labor, interior and economics ministries announced on Monday.

The program will have a budget of €31.2 billion and span 24 months, aiming to create 1,300 new full-time jobs in the public healthcare sector.

The jobs will be eligible for two age groups, between 55 and 67, and between 67 and 74, who have nevertheless not fulfilled full pension requirements and are registered on DYPA’s unemployment list.

The subsidy amount per beneficiary is set at 75% of salary and non-salary costs up to €750 and is covered by DYPA’s budget and the state.

“Not only do we support the long-term unemployed through this program, but we further bolster the structures of the public healthcare system. Our aim, which is clear, is to increase the disposable income of citizens,” Labor Minister Domna Michailidou said.

PS I want to see a 74-year-old learning to be a healthcare worker and what in the world…

  1. i think perhaps the figure was 31.2 _million_ and not billion – that would actually work out to 24000 x 1300, which over 24 months would be 1k per month for the 1300 positions.. after withholdings etc thats basically the 500-odd euro minimum wage. hard to see how someone in his 70s is going to be trained in medicine, the process of training/education would take longer than the 24 months just by itself. sounds more like a highly targeted vote-buying scheme paid for of course with money stolen from us.

It depends what “training” is involved – currently (and not only here) the excess death numbers are huge – I daresay minimum training would be required to “process” these bodies.

Vote-buying as well of course 🙂

  3. Such cynicism! Presumably they will be trained in ancillary positions requiring a low skill set such as cleaners
and porters and not involved in any medical capacity.
