Protesters “exorcise” same-sex marriage bill with prayers and incense

A few handful of people gathered outside the Parliament on Thursday, while inside the building lawmakers were debating the bill on same-sex marriage and parenthood.

Holding icons, crosses and the bible, the crowed prayed against the bill.

Prayers were also read for saving the soul of those MPs who will vote in favor of the bill later tonight.

Some protester burned incense to give a more spiritual flair to the event.

Some others held cardboard and chanted “Homeland-Religion-Family”, the slogan introduced and massively used by the colonels’ junta (1967-1974) in order to put the Greek society on the “right path.”

Some protesters told media that such a bill is “bad for children to be raised in  same-sex families.”

We hate progress but we love modern technology…

Based on the monks’priests attire, it seems as if the protesting group are followers of the Old Calendarists – Παλαιοημερολογίτες –  an arch-conservative, traditionalists’ sect who separated from mainstream Eastern Orthodox churches refusing to adopt the revised Julian calendar.

Having noted that it should be recalled that this does not mean that the official Greek Orthodox Church supports the bill. In contrary. It’s just that it refrained from organizing protests.

The bill has divided the Greek society despite the fact that the anti-bill arguments lacked any scientific evidence but were merely based on religious assumptions and doctrines.

    • Greece has a conservative, right-wing government since 2019

      • Considering we were locked down for how long in our municipality till Herr Mitso & wife got caught outside his. They were wrong then and now. Doesn’t mean they are in the right with what they just did.

    • Aaron, nobody is forcing this on you! So why do you care? Your personal views and bigoted opinions are the truth?

      • It’s not being forced? My eye. This gov’t forced a vote without any public debate, they could of open it up for the ppl to vote, but Herr Mitso said no. All to please their overlords in the EU.

    • Aaron,Gods teachings lead us to love and above all to kindness to our planet, our fellow humans and to all living things,we must judge a marriage by its goodness and those two people by their goodness,if we see there is is not this goodness then we can condemn it for all the correct reasons as in any marriage between any two humans not for the reasons that you condemn it.
