More than 32.7 million tourists visited Greece in 2023, breaking another record. Receipts from tourism reached 20.5 billion euros.
According to data from the Bank of Greece issued on Wednesday, February 21, travel receipts showed an increase of 15.7% compared to 2022 and amounted to 20,459.5 billion euros.
This development is due to the increase in receipts from residents of EU-27 countries by 11.5%, which amounted to 11,158.3 million euros, as well as receipts from residents of non-EU-27 countries by 18.5 %, which amounted to 8.591 billion euros.
Specifically, receipts from residents of euro area countries amounted to €9,058.9 billion, up by 12.4%, while receipts from residents of EU-27 countries outside the euro area showed an increase of 7.8 % and amounted to 2.099 billion euros.
In particular, receipts from Germany increased by 9.5% to 3.563 billion euros, while receipts from France increased by 11.6% to 1.425 billion. euro.
Of the non-EU-27 countries, receipts from the United Kingdom rose by 5.8% to €3.307 billion, as did receipts from the US, which rose by 14.0% to €3.307 billion. to 1.367 billion euros. Finally, receipts from Russia decreased by 20.8% and amounted to 32.8 million euros.
In terms of travel traffic, it recorded an increase of 17.6% to 32.7 million travelers, compared to 27.8 million travelers in 2022.
In particular, travel traffic through airports increased by 12.7%, while that through road border stations by 34.9%.
Travel traffic from EU-27 countries amounted to 19.65 million travelers, showing an increase of 15.6% compared to 2022, while travel traffic from non-EU-27 countries increased by 20.8% and amounted to 13.01 million travelers. Travel traffic from euro area countries increased by 11.5%, as well as that from EU-27 countries outside the euro area, which increased by 24.4%. In particular, travel traffic from Germany increased by 9.5% and reached 4.7 million travelers, while that from France increased by 4.2% and reached 1.831 million travelers. In terms of countries outside the EU27, travel traffic from the UK increased by 2.4% to 4.5 million travellers, as well as that from the US, which increased by 29.2% to 1.4 million travelers. Finally, travel traffic from Russia decreased by 1.0% and amounted to 35.7 thousand travelers.
Inbound travellers
In 2023, the number of inbound travellers rose by 17.6% to 32,735.2 thousand (2022: 27,835.5 thousand). Specifically, traveller flows through airports grew by 12.7%, while traveller flows through road border-crossing points increased by 34.9%. Τhe number of travellers from within the EU27 rose by 15.6% year-on-year to 19,640.9 thousand and travellers from outside the EU27 increased by 20.8% to 13,094.2 thousand. The number of travellers from within the euro area rose by 11.5% and travellers from non-euro area EU27 countries increased by 24.4%. Specifically, the number of travellers from Germany rose by 9.5% to 4,764.2 thousand, as did the number of travellers from France, by 4.2% to 1,831.0 thousand. Turning to non‑EU27 countries, the number of travellers from the United Kingdom rose by 2.4% to 4,591.7 thousand and the number of travellers from the United States increased by 29.2% to 1,406.5 thousand. Lastly, the number of travellers from Russia fell by 1.0% to 35.7 thousand.
The Bank of Greece noted that Inbound traveller flows exclude cruise passengers other than those recorded in the Border Survey.
