Fans of Israeli football club Maccabi Tel Aviv have beaten a foreign national in downtown Athens, media report on Thursday. the victim has been taken to hospital with an ambulance.
According to initial reports, the victim, a young man of Arab origin, was holding a Palestinian flag and was exiting the metro station at Syntagma Square.
However, in pictures published later there is no flag in sight.

The Israeli club’s supporters had gathered at Syntagma a few hours before their match against the Greek team Olympiakos in the Europa Conference League.

The victim, an Egyptian migrant as some media report, fainted and fell on the stairs of the square. He sustained injuries and an ambulance took him to a hospital in the Greek capital.

A few houra later, media reported that police detained one person.
According to documentonews.gr, the Maccabi fans beat also another man at a different time.
It should be noted that strong police forces were monitoring the Maccabi fans gathering at Syntagma Square.
