Two Swedish nationals were handed down suspended sentences for attempting to remove the Greek flag from a Police Security Directorate on the island of Rhodes.
The First-instance Court on Tuesday handed down suspended sentences of six and seven months imprisonment, respectively, to two 19-year-old men who had attempted to remove the Greek flag from a Police Security Sub-Directorate building.
The sentences are suspended for three years.
The two Swedes were found guilty of disrespecting symbols of great national importance, while the court accepted their lawyers argument regarding their young age as a mitigating circumstance.
The incident took place last Saturday, May 18, approximately 10 pm and the two 19-year-old Swedish tourists were arrested on their own accord by police officers of the Rhodes Security Sub-Directorate.
The young Swedes had also videotaped their action with their mobile phones and then uploaded it to a social media platform.
In the court room, both declared remorse and said that earlier they had consumed a quantity of alcohol and were under its influence, local daily rodiaki.gr reported.
After the court’s decision, the two young Swedes were released.
