Greece’s self-employed file against ‘presumptive income’ tax law

A legal suit filed with the Council of State on June 17 intends to contest a 2023 tax law establishing a minimum presumptive income for the self-employed, the Coordinating Committee of Freelancers, Professionals, Craftsmen and Merchants announced during a press conference on Monday.

It has proposed that all its members join a nationwide strike, abstaining from their duties and activities, on the day when the suit is filed and attend a rally to be held outside Greece’s supreme administrative court.

Speakers at the press conference said the measure was “exceptionally odious and unfair”, and that in violation to the Constitution, it led “to the annihilation of thousands of freelancers and self-employed.”

Among the groups represented at the press conference were lawyers, craftsmen and merchants, small business owners, taxi drivers, accountants, dietitians and street market vendors, among others, while speakers included main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Stefanos Kasselakis and representatives of the opposition parties PASOK and Nea Aristera.

There was universal condemnation of the measure, which was criticized as “horizontal and unfair”, while the legal arguments against it concerned the violation of constitutional principles.
