Lightning sparks wildfires as stormy weather hits Greece

A bad weather front with heavy lighting stroke Greece on Friday and sparked 24 fires across the country, the Fire Service said.

Two wildfires ignited by lightning Friday afternoon are burning in Kalyvia Thorikou and in Penteli, eastern Attica.

On the island of Evia, four lighting bolts caused fires in Kymi-Aliveri and Eretria. An earlier blaze in the area of Mistros was quickly brought under control.

With firefighters, engines, volunteers, water dropping air craft and helicopters the fires were quickly extinguished before they spread.

Severe thunderstorms and local squalls are sweeping across much of Greece, impacting the Attica region and Athens since Friday afternoon.

Storms have moved from northern Attica into central Athens, with hail reported in parts of the capital and power outages in northern suburbs.

Heavy rain or just a bit or rain? Car stuck in a pothole that suddenly appear in Halkidos Street, in Patisia district of  central Athens. An utility company has recently done works in the area, apparently …the usual Greek way! the driver was slightly injured and will be compensated, media report.

Temporary flooded phenomena in main streets of the Greek capital Athens were observed as usual.

The fire service received dozens of calls to rescue motorists trapped in waters or in elevators due to power outage or to cut fallen trees.

The bad weather front will continue also on Saturday with more intense phenomena and possibly on Sunday, as the National Meteorological Service EMY has warned. EMY Weather  Warning here on KTG.
