Thessaloniki Metro to launch on November 30, says Infrastructure Minister

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Staikouras confirmed that the main line of the Thessaloniki Metro will be delivered on November 30.

“In just 87 days, Thessaloniki will have its Metro… 18 years after the signing of the project’s main contract on April 26, 2006,” he said during a press conference held by the contractor AKTOR in Thessaloniki on Thursday.

Deputy Minister Nikos Tachiaos highlighted that following the completion of the main line and the extension to Kalamaria (expected in the second half of 2025), the next priority will be the creation of a second Metro line. This new line will start from Ano Evosmos and end in Charilaou.

AKTOR’s CEO Alexandros Exarchou emphasized that the Thessaloniki Metro should serve as a model for future public works, ensuring not only better execution but also reduced costs.

The main line of the Thessaloniki Metro will operate with 18 driverless trains (with an attendant for safety). It will have a maximum transport capacity of 18,000 passengers per hour in each direction, with an estimated daily total of 254,000 passengers, a figure projected to reach 350,000 with the addition of 15 more trains.

PS

Thessaloniki Metro has been “inaugurated” several times, the latest on May 2023,with a test drive for the Prime Minister and a big entourage of ministers, deputy ministers and local dignitaries.
