A 43-year-old woman has allegedly confessed to stabbing her brother to death after a quarrel over a glass of water. Both, the woman and the 46-year-old victim, have been suffering from mental disabilities and have been living alone in the family apartment after their parents’ deaths a few years ago.
The murder took place in Nea Smyrni suburb of southern Athens on Saturday.
After the incident, the woman had called the ambulance saying that her brother was not breathing.
Health workers found the brother with a severe wound the the belly and informed the police.
A forensic exam showed the victim had died from stab wounds to his abdomen.
She was arrested and charged on Saturday with intentional manslaughter, causing dangerous bodily harm, and illegal carrying and the use of a weapon.
She will undergo a psychiatric evaluation before she will testify before an investigative magistrate.
It is not known whether the siblings were receiving visits by the social services of the local Municipality or any other institution.
PS How comes that the severely mentally disabled siblings were living on their own, without a caretaker or in a private or public facility?
No journalist bothered to report about this serious social issue that has parents of disabled children living the hell in the prospect of “what will happen to my child if I die?”
The answer is simple: because the government does not care. On the contrary. It recently proceeded to the closure of “mental facilities” with the aim to facilitate “independent living.”
Without creating a safety net you just throw these people on the streets to save money as dictated by neo-liberal and cruel policies.
