MP Yiannis Sarakiotis, elected with SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance in Fthiotida, sent a letter to the Parliament speaker on Thursday announcing that he leaves the party’s parliamentary group and goes independent.
SYRIZA reportedly urged him to return his seat to the party.
Sarakiotis did not vote for the new SYRIZA leader on Sunday but he was seen together with the deposed leader Stefanos Kasselakis, media reported.
SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance has now 28 deputies in the 300-member Parliament. In the elections of June 2023, the party had elected 47 deputies. Following the resignation of its MPs tha party also lost its “main opposition” status.
Although Kasselakis announced the formation of his new party on Saturday and five MP resigned from SYRIZA to join the “Movement for Democracy”, the party has no representation in the Parliament as it needs at least 10 MPs to form a parliamentary group.
