His grandparents and an aunt, who is also his godmother, gave the green light for the donation of the organs of 3-year-old boy Angelos – Angel – who was declared “brain-dead” at noon on Sunday.
Angelos who was severely abused by his mother and her partner will donate his heart and kidneys to that other children may have a happier, healthier and longer life the little boy was not blessed to enjoy.
In statements to the press, the commander of the University Hospital PAGNI in Herakleio, Crete, Giorgos Chalkiadakis pointed out hat both Angelos’ grandparents and his aunt, who is also his godmother, gave the “green light” for the donation of his heart and kidneys.
While the boy was intubated in the hospital ICU and struggling for his life, his mother and her partner arrested in local police station, his grandmother applied and was granted custody for the toddler who was tortured by his mother and her partner.
“The written consent of the child’s guardian has been given, and the process has begun to see what is foreseen for the organ donation,” Chalkiadakis stated.
He reiterated that “things were difficult for Angelos from the very beginning” and “unfortunately the miracle we were all expecting for the little boy did not happen.”
The issue is now in the hands of the National Organ Transplant Organization (EOM) to determine the compatibility of the little boy’s organs and whether they can be donated for transplantation as well as to find the potential recipients.
Change of charges for mother, partner
The dramatic development for 3-year-old Angelos is expected to lead to a change in the main charge his 26-year-old mother and her 44-year-old partner are facing.
The original charge “attempted homicide” is expected to be upgraded to “homicide.”
Following the outrage of the local society threatening to lynch them, the mother and her partner were taken under strict secrecy to Korydallos prison in Athens on Saturday.
