A state of emergency has been declared in the Municipality of the island of Amorgos due to the seismic activity in the sea area between Santorini and Amorgos.
The decision was taken on Wednesday by the Secretary General of Civil Protection Vassilis Papageorgiou, and will be in force until 11 March, 2025.
It is noted that the Municipality of Santorini has already been declared in a state of emergency of Civil Protection.
Meanwhile, the earthquakes in the sea area between Santorini and Amorgos, in the area of Anydros, continue on Wednesday.

According to the Earthquake Risk Assessment Committee on Wednesday morning, 15,300 earthquakes have occurred between January 26 and February10, 2025.
The Amorgos Fault
Earlier on Wednesday, seismologist Akis Tselentis posted on Facebook that there is a possibility of a six-magnitude earthquake in the Cyclades region. He emphasizes that “the worst-case scenario is the activation of the great fault of Amorgos.”
He explained that there is a “bidirectional relationship between faults and the rise of magma,” adding that both the possible 6-magnitude earthquake and the possible larger earthquake “will cause a tsunami.”
Tselentis added that the worst-case scenario is “the great fault of Amorgos to be activated,” which, as he points out, “does not seem likely,” according to the calculations he has made.
He also added that “the scenario of the activation of the fault (which I don’t hope for) is possible and in this case we are talking about a fairly large earthquake.”
Preventive measures
The Civil protection has extended the preventive measures until upcoming Saturday, February 15.
