Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY issued an Orange Alert on Monday warning of severe weather deterioration in the next couple of days.
The bad weather front is forecast to bring significant temperature drop by 12-15 degrees Celsius, heavy rains and storms, heavy snowfalls locally and stormy northern winds of 8 Beaufort and locally 9 B.
According to state broadcaster ERT rainfalls and snow on the mountainous areas are forecast also in Athens and Attica.
The bad weather front comes from Ukraine and the deterioration is forecast to be of short duration, affect Greece on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 18-19, 2025.
The cold weather follows a “mini summer” in March with temperatures to have been some 15+ degrees Celsius above the seasonal average over the weekend.
EMY Weather Warning
A. Heavy rains and storms:
a. Heavy rains in Thrace from the morning hours of Tuesday 18-03-25 until the afternoon of the same day.
b. Heavy rains and storms in Halkidiki, Thessaly (mainly Magnesia), Sporades islands, Evia, Fthiotida and Viotia from early in the afternoon of Tuesday, March 18, until the early hours of Wednesday, March 19.
B. Locally heavy snowfalls
a. From the morning hours of Tuesday until the evening of the same day in the mountainous, semi-mountainous areas of Macedonia, Thrace and Epirus, while in Macedonia and Thrace it will snow also in areas with lower altitudes.
b. From late afternoon on Tuesday until the morning hours of Wednesday 19-03-25 in the mountainous, semi-mountainous and lower altitude areas of Thessaly, Evia, Evrytania, Fthiotida and Viotia.
c. On Wednesday and until the morning hours hours in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of eastern Peloponnese and until the evening in the mountainous areas of Crete.
Stormy north-northeasterly winds of intensity 8 and locally 9 Beaufort will blow in the Aegean Sea and eastern mainland from Tuesday afternoon until the evening hours of Wednesday.
