A 51-year-old man attacked with a screwdriver a passenger in a public bus, then went to a local police station and assaulted three police officers.
The incidents took place in Koropi, a small town in the East of Athens, on Sunday morning.
Speaking to media, the bus driver said the passenger was hit twice on the head and one in the neck. He added that there seemed to be no connection between the attacker and the victim. The attacker fled when he opened the bus doors.
The man then walked the 800 meters into the police station of Koropi where he assaulted three officers with the same screwdriver, including the station sergeant, whom he stroke on the head.
Officers of the rapid response unit arrived at the station and ordered the man to surrender. When he refused, officers fired a shot at his legs to subdue him and then arrested him.
The injured bus passenger and the police officers were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Questions have been raised as to how could the man just walk unbothered into the police station. The representative of the union of police personnel in south-east Attica pointed out to personnel shortages, adding that “the police station of Koropi works with only 30% of its personnel capacity.”
