Greece’s Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis introduced a new draft law on Tuesday, that abolishes the special statute of limitations for offenses and crimes committed by ministers.
According to the bill, ministerial offenses will carry a limitation period of five to eight years for misdemeanors and fifteen to twenty years for felonies.
The previous law allowed such offenses to expire if prosecution was not initiated within two parliamentary sessions.
By eliminating the special statute, the new legislation will align ministers with those laws applied to ordinary citizens.
It should be noted that there is on and off a society demand to abolish the law that provides a special immunity status for ministers, however, no government had be willing to change it so far.
