A young tourist from the Netherlands fell from a height of 25 meters deep down in Samaria gorge on the island of Crete on Easter Monday.
The young man suffered serious injuries and he was transferred to a hospital in Chania after a rescue operation that lasted several hours.
He was hiking alone and he was on the path leading to Giglio when he suddenly found himself in the void, falling from a great height.
Due to his injuries he was unable to move and he was spotted by a group of Greek hikers several hours later.
The hikers immediately alerted authorities via the <112> emergency phone line, a rescue operation was launched with firefighters and professional rescue teams.
According to media reports, the hikers who found him, managed to stop the bleeding he had and helped him to regain consciousness.
When the rescuers arrived they had to carry the young injured tourist on a stretcher for over five hours on a dangerous and uphill path, as no helicopter could approach the difficult to access area.
An ambulance and medical team were waiting for the injured man at Xyloskalo, picking him up around 01:30 early Tuesday morning hours and his transfer to the hospital in Chania was completed an hour later.
The young tourist from the Netherlands has open rupturing wound on the head and bruises in his arms and legs, but his condition is reportedly not considered as critical.
During his transport, he often fell into a deep sleep due to exhaustion, and the rescuers made many stops to wake him up and to rest.
