The Foreign Ministries of Greece and Bulgaria have negotiated and agreed on the use of the waters of the Arda River, in coordination with the co-responsible Ministries of Environment and Energy and Rural Development and Food.
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and his Bulgarian counterpart Georg Georgiev signed the relevant Joint Declaration on May 2.
According to a statement by the Foreign Ministry in Athens, the agreement “ensures the provision on the part of Bulgaria of a sufficient quantity of water for a period of 5 years, allowing the smooth and uninterrupted operation of the irrigation system and agricultural production in the border region of Evros [North-East Greece], after the expiry of the relevant sixty-year intergovernmental Agreement between Greece and Bulgaria.”
