Greece Weather: Sahara Dust goes, Temperature Drop comes

The Sahara dust from northern Africa that covered large parts of Greece during the week is slowly moving to the East and a so-called “Polar air stream” will bring northern winds, rainfalls and temperature drop.

The “mini summer prelude” with temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius will be temporarily over.

Meteorologists consider the change of the weather as “typical” for the month of May.

The forecast a temperature drop of 5 to 7 degrees Celsius due to northern winds as of Monday, May 12, 2025, and rainfalls mainly in central and northern Greece.

“The change in weather  with gradual temperature drop will begin on Saturday [May 10] with the prevalence of northerly winds up to 6 Beaufort. They will not only lower the temperature but will also drive away the dust,” meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafillias posted on Facebook.

“The majority of rainfalls will occur in central and northern Greece, with the islands generally not experiencing any phenomena, and neither will Attica,” he added.

Starting next week, the rain will affect even more areas, while the temperature will drop again, reaching approximately 6-7 degrees below normal levels for the season,” he noted.

On his part, meteorologist and retired director of the National Meteorological Service, Thodoris Kolydas, forecasts also a temperature drop of 5 to 7 degrees Celsius stressing that as of Saturday, the weather will return to normal seasonal levels and thus until the middle of upcoming week.

“Weather instability is expected in May almost every year, Kolydas noted.

In his social media post he added the expected temperatures in four major cities of Greece, i.e. Athens, Thessaloniki, Larissa and Heraklion, Crete from Friday to Thursday, May 9-15, 2025.
