Newborn boy thrown alive by mother in garbage bin

A newborn baby was found alive in a garbage bin in the Nea Alikarnassos area of Heraklio on the island of Crete late on Tuesday night.

The newborn baby, a boy, was found wrapped in a plastic bag and was immediately transferred to the General Hospital of Heraklio.

The mother, a 33-year-old woman,is being treated at the same hospital under police guard.

She gave birth to the baby in her home, just 250 meters away from the garbage bin.

The woman was found in the house by her partner in a pool of blood, who called the emergency services.

The ambulance crew who responded to the call immediately realized that the woman had given birth and were persistently asking her,  where the child was.

It was her partner who told them that he saw the woman returning from the corner where the garbage bins were.

One of the two rescuers began searching around the house and went to the garbage bin, “and jumped in within seconds” neighbors said.

According to local media crete24.gr, the woman had given birth alone in the home she shared with her partner, who claimed that he was not aware that she was pregnant.

On Wednesday morning, the newborn’s condition was described as “satisfactory” hospital doctors told media adding “in the sense that he was breathing on his own, had metabolic acidosis and was hypothermic. He was immediately hospitalized in the Neonatal Unit. This morning his condition is satisfactory. The disorders that existed have improved and we hope that within a few days he will be able to leave the Neonatal Unit.”,

The 33-year-old mother is in good condition and is being treated in the hospital’s maternity clinic. She is to be charged with attempted murder of an infant.

Police are investigating the incident but also the living conditions of the couple as the custody for newborn boy will still have to be decided.

Neighbors claimed that both the mother and her partner -who claimed no to be the baby’s biological father – had mental health issues.
