Domestic helper charged for arson by negligence for Chios wildfire

A three-year prison sentence and a fine of 10,000 euros were imposed by the Chios Three-Member Plenary Court on a 31-year-old Georgian national, who was found guilty of arson by negligence that broke out on Monday in Leptopoda village on the island of Chios in eastern Greece.

Simultaneously, there was a significant fire occurring in another part of central Chios.

According to the case file, the woman had arrived in Chios only 24 hours prior to the incident to take up employment as a domestic helper for an elderly woman.

The fire allegedly started from a half-lit cigarette that she threw on the road, causing a fire in a dry vegetation area.

The court, taking into account the mitigating circumstances, imposed the lower sentence for the offense of causing a fire by negligence. The judgement is immediately enforceable.
