High temperatures, low humidity and strong winds, that is Hot-Dry-Windy conditions, create dangerous weather phenomena in Greece throughout the whole week July 14-20, 2025.
High temperatures, low humidity and increased intensity of northern winds in a large part of the country, which automatically increases the risk of fires.
Unpleasant heat
The heatwave started already on Sunday, July 13, where maximum temperature was recorded at 17:10 in Messinia, Peloponnese, with 38.3° Celsius.

Sunday afternoon and also early on Monday morning, I had the intention for a quick swim. Intention remained an intention, though.
No idea, what they’re anticipating for. A cool breeze, probably.
At 8:30 am on Monday, temperature at my balcony was 31 degrees Celsius. I had to drop my plan for a quick swim again as the atmosphere was sticky, kind of suffocating and unpleasant. I choose the balcony alternative…
At 3:00 pm on Monday, it’s 37° C in the shade, in the balcony. Time for A/C.
The hot- dry-windy phenomenon
According to meteo service of the National Observatory of Athens, a warm ridge in the middle troposphere over southeastern Europe from July 13 onward will cause a prolonged wave of high temperatures and atmospheric drought conditions.
Fire warnings should be increased at least until Wednesday, July 16, when northerly winds are expected to strengthen in the eastern mainland and the Aegean Sea, where the hot – dry – windy phenomenon will prevail.
These conditions will have a significant impact on pyro-meteorological parameters, with a daily worsening of the fire risk.
Dry and dead vegetation, combined with high temperatures, dramatically increase flammability, which will also apply to the evening hours.
In particular, on the two-day period of July 15-16, the risk of pyrogenic fires in continental areas of Western and Northern Greece will be increased.
The persistence of this particular atmospheric circulation is expected to persist until Sunday, July 20, which makes the need for preparedness of the competent authorities and citizens imperative, since conditions will worsen every day.
