Little girl’s death attributed to drowning. Identification still a mystery

The death of the 3-year-old girl washed out at a beach of Palaio Faliro in Athens is attributed to drowning excluding any criminal activity. This is the first results of the autopsy and forensic examination conducted by a coroner on Monday. Citing sources from the forensic department, state broadcaster ERT reported that water was found in the girl’s lungs.

Authorities are now awaiting the results of the toxicological and histological laboratory tests, expected after a couple of weeks, in order to fully clarify the picture.

Based on the findings, the forensic experts concluded that the bruises and injuries were conducted post-mortem, that is that when the girl fell into the sea it most probably crashed on rocks or other items. Furthermore, they estimate that the girl was suffering from some metabolic disease leading to a picture of emaciation and bone problems.

The girl was found dead in the early hours of Sunday at Edem beach and had bruises and injuries on her body and a general picture of malnutrition. Her body bore multiple blows to the face – on the forehead, eyes, lips and nose – as well as obvious injuries to various parts of her body.

However, the drama around the little girl is not over as nobody has asked for her or reported her as “missing” 36 hours after she was found.

No parent, no relative has searched for her and there has been no feedback r any response whatsoever to the appeal for identification information by the Greek Coast Guard issued on Sunday afternoon.

The mystery deepens and the case becomes more complicated.

One scenario probably leaked by the authorities who take into consideration also the possibility that the child was an unaccompanied minor, possibly from a migrant or refugee accommodation facility.

Investigation has already been extended to ports, marinas and ships that were sailing in the area, as well as to migrant communities.

Note: Even if the girl was an unaccompanied minor in a refugees or migrants facility, she should have been registered and somebody would have noticed her disappearance.

It is worth recalling that the little girl was wearing a swimming suit with long-sleeves normally used to protect babies toddlers from the sun.

The people who were at the beach at the time the body was found were cleared by the police after checks and testimonies.

  1. Is it maybe possible that the little girl went swimming with an adult and that this person also drowned?
