PM Mitsotakis reiterates Greece’s objection to Turkey’s SAFE participation

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated on Monday Greece’s position on the participation of Turkey participation in the Security Action For Europe (SAFE).

“Our position is that countries that threaten EU member states with war cannot participate,” Mitsotakis said during a joint press conference with European Council President António Costa.

“It is up to [these countries] to build good relations with Europe, but that requires respect for its principles,” he added.

The Turkish parliament officially declared that “unilateral action by Greece would constitute a casus belli, i.e. occasion for war, in the late 1990’s.

Last week, when Turkey submitted its application to SAFE participation, both Greece and Cyprus, expressed their objections and threatened with veto. It should be recalled that the North of Cyprus has been illegally occupied by Turkey since 1974.

It was French President Emmanuel Macron who pushed for Turkey’s participation in SAFE.
