13 Turkish nationals arrested with dozens of weapons in their possession

Greek Police arrested 13 Turkish nationals who were in possession of dozens of weapons, magazines and other weapon accessories. The arrests took place in the area of Soufli, Evros, in north-eastern Greece.

Following a tip off, police officers of the Sub-Directorate for Combating Organized Crime of Northern Greece have arrested the seven men and six women who had hidden in their luggage 147 Glock pistols, 190 magazines and various weapon accessories.

As there is no official Police announcement with details, information is rather confused about the where about of the arrestees. Some media report that they had illegally entered Greece by crossing the Evros river, the natural border between Greece and Turkey.

Others like local media evrosnews.gr report that they have been living in Greece for quite some time.

The whole story started around the beginning of September with the arrest of a Greek man in the area of Soufli. Evidence emerged that he did not come there by chance from another part of Greece and investigating police officers came across the traces of an organization that brings weapons from Turkey and traffics them in Greece.

The 13 Turkish nationals allegedly came to Evros as… visitors. However, their goal was to receive the weapons that others had brought from Turkey and hid them. They reportedly told police to smuggle the weapons but they had no further information.

Some media report that they were stopped for a control while they were driving rented vans and pretending they were couples.

The police estimate that the weapons would be transported to Athens and then abroad while they are examining whether the weapons are related to the Dalton gang that operates in Turkey.

Police continues investigation.
