Femicide: Brutally beaten by husband, woman dies after 9.5 months in hospital

For nine and a half months, 53-year-old Georgia was fighting for her life in a ward of the biggest hospital in Athens. On Tuesday morning, she lost the battle and succumbed to her severe head injuries caused by her 65-year-old husband. The woman is yet another victim of femicide in Greece.

Georgia was brutally beaten by her husband and suffered serious head injuries on January 17, 2025.

She was taken to the hospital of Karystos, the coastal town in southern Evia, and from there to Evangelismos hospital in Athens.

Her husband had told doctors that she had hit her head when she fell “while doing outdoor work.”

Her transfer to Athens was deemed necessary, while at the same time, an anonymous denouncement revealed the horrific abuse the woman was experiencing.

She was living in a shack without electricity and water, these difficulties were the least she had to face. Her husband beat her for years, with whatever he could find, be it sticks of wood or iron, as she had confided in her relatives.

In the 9.5 months she spent in the hospital, her condition worsened.

“She was unable to help herself, she couldn’t remember well, her mind was not functioning due to the transplant, the surgery. She had high intracranial pressure, she had had a drain. Her heart could not take it,”  her niece told media on the day of her death..

The 65-year-old perpetrator had been arrested initially on charges of attempted murder.

After Georgia’s death, the charges will be converted to intentional manslaughter.

Georgia is one more femicide victim in Greece in one more country where women do not dare to speak out and move out of relationships with monster in their homes.
