Health Minister & ND vice favors “American model of gun possession” (POLL)

While Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis prepares to announce stricter gun control measures in the wake of the deadly vendetta between two rival families on Crete, a government minister and vice president of ruling New Democracy came out as supporter of the “American model” in terms of gun possession and self-protection.

“I like the American model. Generally, I like it for people to be ready to fight and to be able to defend their freedom. I like freedom a lot. And freedom needs to be defended,” Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis told Open TV on Thursday morning.

“I am in favor of the American model, I like the idea of self-protection,” Minister Georgiadis said adding that he probably has the same position on the issue as Kyriakos Velopoulos [the nationalist leader of Greek solution party].

“I like the American model on gun possession. This has always been my opinion, I have not changed it. But legal [gun possession], only legal,” he stressed.

He added that this is not the official position of the government and the New Democracy.

Regarding the deadly shootout in Vorizia village last Saturday, Georgiadis said: “I can’t hide it, I’m surprised that there are still areas in Greece that live in the 19th century because these behaviors, the vendettas, he took the house from the bottom and took it to the top in 2025, it seems unthinkable to me that we should be discussing them.”

“I like the idea of self-protection. I like it. I’m not against it. This has been my opinion since I was a little kid. I believe this, but it’s not what’s happening in Crete. In Crete, guns are illegal. This is something different,” he added.

And he continued: “You should know that the issue of gun ownership in the US is a very big issue. In every election, it plays a role and in the end, even the Democratic presidents who were against it when they were in power didn’t dare touch it. In America, they have strict self-protection laws. If someone comes into your house, you can shoot them. This is not the case in Europe… another culture, a different one. “But I generally like people to be brave and to be able to defend their freedom. I like freedom very much and freedom needs to be defended,” he noted.

He apparently doesn’t know the difference between license for “gun possession” and license for “gun use” which in Greece is only for the Armed forces and under certain circumstances.

As if we don’t have an outbreak of violence in Greece in the last two years with guns or punches and knives even among minors… all we now need is “licensed gun possession.”

Main opposition party PASOK urged the Prime Minister: “While the Prime Minister avoids commenting on the shocking event of the vendetta, it is worth the government telling us what its position is on what Mr. Georgiadis is saying.”

  1. The problem with gun control is that you have to be able to stop weapons coming in. greece is a country of islands and coast and doing that is very difficult, especially as we are close to rougue states that supply weapons. If you cant stop the supply then you need to control the use by heavy penalties on the one hand and reasonable access on the other. There is a lot of panica bout guns crime in the USA but a lot of the deaths are suicides and a lot of the rest are sue to acuiring gune legally being too easy. Gunsa re not the problem, its the peopl;e who can get them

  2. I’ve been to weddings and baptisms all over Greece from the far north to the far south. Only in Crete have guns been fired. I think the firing of guns at events was outlawed by the Junta but the message hasn’t reached Crete yet. Every celebration involves guns being fired, e.g. parties at Pascha, 15 August, New Year’s Eve, name days, birthdays or any random weekend in the summer. Often the person firing is a policeman because they always have a firearm with them.
