The crash occurred shortly after 12.30 a.m. on Artemidos Avenue, when the driver’s vehicle veered off course and struck the three pedestrians. Witnesses said the car appeared to be traveling at high speed prior to the collision. The victim’s mother and sister were also injured.
The victim’s partner is being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) at KAT Hospital in Athens, suffering serious injuries including an open tibia fracture and head trauma. She underwent a complex surgical operation, and doctors described the coming hours as critical.
A witness told public broadcaster ERT that the driver appeared unaware of the gravity of the incident. “When the rescuer told him, ‘You’ve killed someone,’ he replied, ‘Yes, but my ear hurts, should we check it?’” she said.
The driver sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized under guard.
Alcohol tests were negative, and authorities have taken a blood sample for toxicology screening amid reports he may have used other substances. Police are also reviewing a previous serious traffic incident involving the driver including use of substances in 2020.
The 24-year-old victim had traveled from Belgium to attend the swearing-in ceremony of his partner, who is now fighting for her life.
Traffic police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash. The driver faces charges including negligent homicide and dangerous driving.
State broadcaster ERT reported that short before the fatal crash, the 29-year-old driver had crashed on another parked car in the area.
PS what if there is a new stricter traffic code? Brainless drivers keep living among us.
