Red Alert Warning in Greece: Heavy rains & storms, winds at 8-9 B, Sahara dust

Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY issued a Read Alert weather warning of heavy rainfalls and storms as well as powerful winds in the next days.

Heavy rains and storms are expected from the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 6, until the morning hours of Thursday, January 8, 2026.

Most affected areas are those in the western and north-eastern parts of the country.

It is noted that the rainfall, in addition to being very intense, will also be of long duration. The strong phenomena in many areas will probably be accompanied by local hail and at times by strong winds of intensity 8 to 9 Beaufort.

EMY Weather Warning

Locally heavy rainfalls and storms are expected:

 On Tuesday, Jan 6
a. In the Ionian Islands (mainly the area of ​​Corfu, Lefkada, Kefallinia)
b. In Epirus (mainly the regional unit of Thesprotia, Preveza, Arta in the west and Ioannina in the west)
c. In western Sterea (mainly the regional unit of Aitoloakarnania)
d. In eastern Macedonia and Thrace from the afternoon hours (orange warning)

On Wednesday, Jan 7 
a. In the Ionian Islands (mainly the area of ​​Corfu, Lefkada, Kefallinia)
b. In Epirus (mainly the regional unit of Thesprotia, Preveza, Ioannina, Arta)
c. In western Sterea (mainly the regional unit of Aitoloakarnania)
d. In western and southern Peloponnese from the afternoon until late at night (orange warning)
e. In eastern Macedonia and Thrace until late at night (orange warning)

The strong phenomena from the morning hours of Thursday, January 8,  are expected to gradually weaken, however, the bad weather is expected to persist in most areas of the country with different characteristics locally.

According to state broadcaster ERT, the weather phenomena may cause flooding and landslides.

In the night from Wednesday to Thursday winds in the North and Eastern Aegean sea will be blowing with intensity of 9 Beaufort.

Mud-rains due to Sahara dust

The meteo service of the National Observatory of Athens forecasts also mud-rainfalls as the southern winds will be transporting billions of particles of the Sahara dust.

According to the latest forecast data from the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, mud-rains are expected in places until the early hours of Wednesday, Jan 7, mainly in the west and north as well as in the northeastern Aegean Sea.

Mudslides will then occur in places in the rest of the country. From the morning of Thursday, Jan 8, mudslides will be limited to the South and East Aegean and Crete and will stop by the evening.
