The daily limit for money transfers through the IRIS payments service has doubled as of Thursday, as Greece is seeing a surge in popularity for the system that uses mobile phones or QR codes.
The new daily ceiling is now €1,000, for both personal transactions and dealings with businesses.
IRIS Payments is a direct payment system in Greece that allows money transfers based on the mobile number or Tax Number AFM (for professionals), without the need for IBAN, enabling direct payments and collections to individuals and businesses, with the obligation now for most businesses to accept it. It is a solution of the DIAS system offered by all Greek banks and allows payments without card directly from the bank account.
Newly published data for 2025 show that use of IRIS for personal transactions increased 90% on the year, with a total 111.4 million carried out by 4.3 million users. A total 583,445 business users are registered on the service.
