Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY issued a Red Alert warning of a severe weather deterioration with heavy rain- and snowfalls, storms and gusty winds.
The bad weather front will affect the country from Wednesday, January 21, until Thursday, January 22, 2026.
Main characteristics of the bad weather fornt and affected areas are:
A. heavy rains and storms from early Wednesday morning in many areas of the central and southern country and from the afternoon of the same day in the Aegean Sea.
B. locally heavy snowfalls on Wednesday in the mountainous – semi-mountainous areas of mainland Greece and in areas of Thessaly and Macedonia with low altitude.
C. locally gusty winds of 8 to 8 and locally up to 10 Beaufort
EMY RED ALERT WEATHER WARNING
A. Heavy rains and storms are forecast:
a. in the Peloponnese (mainly in Messinia, Laconia, Argolida and Corinth) on Wednesday until the afternoon
b. in eastern Sterea and Evia on Wednesday from pre-noon until evening
c. in Attica from noon – afternoon on Wednesday
d. in Thessaly, Sporades and Cyclades on Wednesday afternoon
e. in the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean from late Wednesday evening until pre-noon on Thursday
f. in the Dodecanese on Thursday until noon
It is noted that the phenomena will be particularly intense and will present a greater risk in the eastern and southern Peloponnese, Attica, Evia, Sporades, the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese.
B. Heavy snowfalls are expected on Wednesday
a. until noon in the mountainous – semi-mountainous areas of the Peloponnese (mainly Arcadia, Achaia and Corinth)
b. until afternoon in the mountainous – semi-mountainous areas of Epirus and western and central Sterea
c. in Thessaly in the mountainous – semi-mountainous areas and in places until afternoon and in lowland areas
d. in western Macedonia until afternoon
e. in central Macedonia at noon – afternoon
f. in the mountainous – semi-mountainous areas of eastern Macedonia and in the mountainous areas of Thrace in the afternoon – evening.
It is noted that snowfalls will be particularly intense in the region of western Macedonia and the regional units of Trikala, Karditsa and Evrytania.
C. Gusty southeasterly winds of 8 to 9 Beaufort will blow until noon on Wednesday, Jan 21, in the northern Ionian Sea and until the morning of Thursday, Jan 22, in the southern and central Aegean Sea.
