Schools in Attica & other regions closed on Jan 21 due to hazardous weather phenomena

All public and private primary and secondary schools, as well as evening schools, in the entire Attica region will remain closed on Wednesday, 21 January, as a precaution in response to severe weather conditions forecast on Wednesday and Thursday.

Lessons will be conducted via distance learning.

The decision was made by Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias, following recommendations from the members of the Risk Assessment Committee, Civil Protection, and the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS).

The decision aims to protect students and educational staff from potential dangers during travel to and from schools, as heavy rainfall with high intensity is expected after midday.

Attica is one of the 5 regions the Greek Civil Protection placed in a state of mobilization (Red Code) from Wednesday to Thursday, January 21-22, 2026 following a Hazardous Weather Phenomena warning issued by the National Meteorological Service EMY (Details HERE at KTG).

Red Code regions:

  • Attica
  • Peloponnese
  • Central Greece
  • Thessaly
  • Western Macedonia

Schools will be closed on Wednesday also in other regions of the country, but it is up to local governments and municipal authorities to decide.
