Storm warning to residents of Athens, Evia, Viotia, Peloponnese

Greece’s Civil Protection urged residents of capital Athens, of Evia and Viotia to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary movement due to a severe rainstorm forecast for Wednesday, January 21, 2026.

The warning sent at 10 a.m. to mobiles via <112> sms noted that the severe weather conditions are forecast “from noon until Wednesday evening” and urged citizens to limit their movements to “essential only.”

According to state broadcaster ERT, the heavy rainstorm is expected from 1 to 2 o’ clock early afternoon and last for three to six hours.

With decision of the Regional Governor, schools of primary and secondary education are closed not only in Athens but throughout the whole Attica region.
Civil servants are allowed to work from home, except those at the front lines.

Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatriafyllias estimated that the rain forecast for Athens will be equivalent to the rainwater of one month.

It has been raining light since the morning hours, while Parnitha Mt in North-West has been covered with snow at an altitute of 1,300 meters.

Similar warnings were sent to residents of Evia and Viotia region at 10 a.m. as well as to Arcadia and Argolida regions in Peloponnese.

The country is hit by an extreme barometric low for the next 48 hours with heavy rainstorms, snowfalls and gusty winds reaching locally up to 11 Beaufort disrupting sea and air traffic.

The National Meteorological Service has issued a RED ALERT warning yesterday, Monday, and is expected to be updated later today.
