Cyprus Alarm: Third drone strikes UK RAF base; Paphos airport evacuated

A third drone was fired at the British Royal Air Force (RAF) base in Cyprus at noon on Monday, March 2, 2026. Cypriot authorities have ordered the evacuation at the civilian airport in Paphos, after “mysterious objects” were located in the air space.

So far, it is unclear whether the drone was intercepted or missed its target.

Sirens sounded at the UK RAF base and fighter jets took off, some media reported.

The first drone allegedly fired by the Hezbollah in Lebanon stroke the RAF base Akrotiri near Limassol 3 minutes after Sunday midnight, short after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the country will join the war against Iran.

A loud explosion was heard in the area, sirens were activated at the base, and fighter jets scrambled. The drone was intercepted.

An attempted second drone strike on the RAF base on Monday morning was again intercepted by the British forces.

Meanwhile, media outlets supporting the Revolutionary Guards claim that ballistic missiles were launched targeting the British RAF base in Cyprus.

Seven drone attacks
Information indicates that the RAF base in Cyprus has been subjected to seven attacks since yesterday, Sunday, March 1, 2026.

According to Kitasweather, cameras from Pissouri recorded four separate incidents from 20:59 at night until 05:15 in the morning. As reported, multiple hovering objects – possibly drones or missiles – were recorded over the British base at Akrotiri. Some appear to be intercepted, while others end up on the ground.

No involvement of Cyprus in the war

President Nikos Christodoulides made very clear on Monday, that:

“Cyprus is not participating and will not participate in any military operations.”

The RAF base is UK soil and Cyprus does not consider to be under attack by Iran-affiliated forces.

Several villages near Akrotiri base were evacuated and schools closed on Monday.

Evacuated is reportedly currently also the UK RAF base in Dhekelia.

RAF bases in Cyprus are being evacuated

Staff at the British base in Akrotiri, have been ordered to leave the premises. Employees are leaving and the gate is closing, a few hours after the drone strike shortly after midnight.

“There is an ongoing security threat. Please return to your homes and remain indoors until further official notice. Move away from windows and take cover behind or under sturdy, solid furniture. Please await further instructions,” the message sent to employees read.

Evacuation of Paphos airport

At the same time, an alarm was sounded at Paphos airport after a suspicious drone was spotted in its airspace. According to initial information, an order was given to immediately evacuate the building of passengers and staff.

The staff of the various services and departments of Paphos International Airport have already left the buildings and are gathered in the airport parking lots awaiting further instructions.

Airline EasyJet has reportedly canceled all UK-Cyprus flights until Thursday, March 5, 2026.

  1. The incompetent moron of a prime minister in the UK is allowing the British air bases in Cyprus to be used to attack Iran. The people of Cyprus are now in great danger: I suggest that they need to evict the British military from their sovereign territory. The UK never did anything good for Greece or Cyprus — only harm.

  2. The UK has a big Over The Horizon Radar (OTHR) on Cyprus that can look deep into Iran. I guess that is the target.
