Taxi drivers throughout Greece will go on a permanent strike as of tomorrow Tuesday, March 17, 2026. The nationwide strike aims to protest the new bill of the Transport Ministry.
The Panhellenic Federation of Taxi Drivers (POIATA) announced the strike after an extraordinary meeting of its Board of Directors on Monday morning in collaboration with local unions.
The strike will begin with a 24-hour work stoppage on Tuesday, the day the bill is introduced in the parliamentary committee, and will continue with repeated 24-hour strikes until the bill is passed.
The president of Attica Taxi drivers union SATA, Thymios Lymberopoulos, confirmed the strike in statements to a radio station. He said, the drivers’ indignation is focused on the way the government is promoting legislation that, in their opinion, serves private interests to the detriment of the industry.
Taxi drivers especially oppose the new bill of the Ministry of Transport concerning the electric propulsion of commercial vehicles, the judicial criminal record and special operating licenses.
“We will continue the mobilizations until the bill is passed and we will fight hard, especially during the tourist season,” the SATA president stressed.
Earlier the union had also threatened with blockades at airports and ports.
Lymberopoulos commented that the drivers feel that the state is essentially abolishing public transportation, handing it over to private individuals.
He also pointed out that Article 52 liberalizes the operation of private vehicles and negatively affects public transport, while the mandatory electric mobility from 2026 for new licenses or vehicle changes burdens professional drivers and serves, according to them, private interests.
In Attica, taxi drivers will reportedly gather tomorrow morning in the center of Athens and then march to the Parliament, expressing their strong opposition to the bill.

The Attica Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA) on Monday announced a series of rolling 24-hour strikes, starting on Tuesday, March 17, and lasting until Friday, March 20, 2026, state-run news agency amna.gr reported at 2:00 pm on Monday but there is still no official press release on the SATA website.
Especially active in mobilization is the Athens & Attica union SATA that has launched several strikes already since spring last year, however without any results positive for the sector.
