Body of young diver found in “Devil’s Well” in SE Athens

The body of the 34-year-old diver was found in an underwater location called “Devil’s Well” in one of the small bays “Limanakia” of Vouliagmeni in south-eastern Athens. The experienced diver had been missing since noon on Sunday, March 22.

The body of the experienced diver was found at great depth on Wednesday afternoon four days of search.

The recovery operation is considered as difficult, is expected to take place in the coming days, last 2 to 3 days and conclude on Saturday.

According to media information, the diver who was a pilot by profession was found in an inaccessible spot, in a depth of 30 or more meters.

Yesterday, Wednesday, during the search, rescue teams had located a flipper, an oxygen bottle and a diving scooter in the area.

The diver’s traces were lost at noon on Sunday and authorities were notified by his friend who was with him on the dive and who managed to get to shore.

A large search and rescue operation was quickly mobilized by the Coast Guard, with the assistance of a floating vessel, divers from the Underwater Expeditions Unit, as well as specialized cave divers from private teams.

The 34-year-old diver had special equipment that provided him with an additional supply of oxygen for a period of approximately 3 to 5 hours, as well as an underwater scooter.

On television channels, divers speculated that the young man lost his orientation, got tired and was ultimately “swallowed” by the currents in the underwater “Devil’s Well.”
