Greece revokes “refugee status” to 1,200 Syrian nationals

Greece’s Migration and Asylum Ministry announced on Tuesday, it has revoked the refugee status of 1,203 Syrian nationals between March 1- April 9, 2026.

The revocations were part part of monitoring the implementation of the relevant policy and re-examination of cases in accordance with the applicable legal framework, the ministry noted.

According to a related announcement, this development forms part of a systematic effort to ensure the proper implementation of international protection procedures. At the same time, the ministry reported positive and measurable results in the area of voluntary returns to Syria, highlighting the effectiveness of its policy and the country’s role at the European level.

Within the framework of the “Implementation of Assisted Voluntary Returns and Reintegration Measures” action, co-financed by the European Union and implemented by IOM Greece, the Ministry of Migration and Asylum stated that Greece is recording the highest performance in this area among the European Union member states.

According to official data, from October 2025 until the present, Greece ranked first in voluntary returns to Syria, with 89 returns – representing approximately 50% of the total number of returns carried out at the European Union level, where a total of 178 returns have been recorded.

The Ministry of Migration and Asylum pointed out that, although the overall number of returns from the European Union to Syria remains low, it is particularly significant that the return process is resuming after a 10-year hiatus, with Greece playing a leading role.

the Ministry announcement underlined that the voluntary returns program is still at an early stage of implementation, while expressing expectations for further improvement in performance in the coming period. It also emphasized the continued implementation of a comprehensive policy aimed at strengthening the credibility of the asylum system and the country’s position in managing migration flows at a European level.
