The marine drone found loaded with explosives in a cave of the island of Lefkada “is Ukrainian,” Defense Minister Nikos Dendias officially announced on Tuesday.
With a delay of five days and after the clear position of Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis on the issue, Dendias himself admitted that it is an “extremely serious matter”, something he had avoided saying since the day the drone was detected, last Thursday.
“I will have the opportunity to inform my counterparts, in the presence of the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, with data related to the drone we caught in Greece, the USV (Unmanned Surface Vehicle), we are certain that it is a Ukrainian drone,” Nikos Dendias said characteristically while in Brussels.
“You understand that the presence of the maritime drone affects the freedom of navigation, but it also affects the safety of navigation. This is an extremely serious issue,” Nikos Dendias pointed out.
It should be noted that the Defense Minister appeared almost cheerful last Saturday at ruling New Democracy meeting claiming that the drone was “fished in international waters” and downplaying the issue.
Dendias’ claim was defused by FM Gerapetritis on Monday spoke of “a particularly serious development”, announcing that “when the investigation is completed and the necessary technical characteristics are obtained, there will be a reaction from the Greek government with the necessary steps.”
The information indicates that the case has cast shadows on Athens-Kiev relations, as there is a risk that military conflicts between Russia and Ukraine will be transferred to the wider Mediterranean region, not to mentionn the Aegean Sea, something that is highly undesirable, newspaper topontiki.gr noted.
It is noted that the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, Mykhailo Fedorov, also participated in the Summit in Brussels via video-conference. After Dendias briefing, Fedorov reserved the right to respond once he has examined all the information about the USV in Lefkada.
