Femicide: Man shoots at his wife, takes his own life

A 57-year-old man shot at his wife and then took his own life with one bullet in Holargos suburb of northern Athens on Monday night.

The 53-year-old victim survived the attempted murder with a bullet in her leg and is being currently treated in a hospital in Greek capital.

The incident unfolded under circumstances that still remain unclear.

According to authorities, the husband shot his wife in the ground-floor parking of the apartment block where they lived.

The woman collapsed to the ground bleeding heavily and began calling for help.

The gunman then returned to the couple’s third-floor apartment and ended his life with a gunshot to the head.

Police officers who arrived at the scene applied a tourniquet to the woman’s leg, managing to stop the bleeding before transporting her to hospital.

Inside the apartment, officers found the 57-year-old man dead, with the firearm used in the incident lying nearby.

According to reports, the couple were members of a sport shooting club and they owned firearms legally.

One neighbor told media: “At around 11 p.m. I heard a loud bang and then screams of ‘help, help,’ followed by a second gunshot.”

Neighbors said the couple had lived in the area for around 25 years without causing any problems. However, relatives reportedly told authorities that the man had recently been threatening his wife frequently.

The 57-year-old husband was a retired pilot.

The 53-year-old victim works as a psychologist at the same hospital where she is being treated. Her life is not in danger.

  1. oh cmon, keep it real. For a femicide to have occurred a woman has to have been kill, not shot at. There is always 2 sides toa story. |Sometimes it is homicided where a woman either kills or drives her husband to committting suicide which is somehting you cannot even say in these politically correct times. And what is it when 2 gay parters try and kill each other. To solve the problem we have to remove the sensationalist feminist rhetoric. These crimes are crimes of passion between 2 people in a relationship where it is usual for one person to be dominant, but to blame these crimes on gender does no help fining a solution
