Greek PM Papademos: Abandoning the Euro Isn’t an Option

In his very first interview since he took office, Greece’s Prime Minister Lucas Papademos talked about the challenges the country faces and categorically rejected an exit from the euro zone and return to drachma. Speaking to US-network CNBC, Papademos  said he was confident that the country would avoid a default in March. He stressed that two more years will be needed for the most difficult and demanding measures.

At the same time he underlined that “the next two weeks will be crucial for two key issues: the agreement for the voluntary restructuring of Greek debt, the so-called PSI, and shaping a new economic adjustment program for the period 2012-2015. Papademos expressed confidencethat there will be an agreement soon and that Greece will receive the approval for the continuation of the bailout by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

“Our objectives are to fullfill our commitments and we’re confident that we’re going to achieve this” he said.

On the PSI talks that were temporarily suspended last Friday, Papademos said that “further reflection is necessary on how to put all elements together.  But I’m confident they will continue and we will reach an agreement that is mutually acceptable in time.”
