EU Wins Nobel Peace Prize: This Must be THE Joke in Nobel Prize History

This must be the joke in the history of Nobel Prize. Crisis-torn European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2012,  ‘for its historic role in uniting the continent’. Unless the Nobel Prize committee members had a sudden attack of a cynicism, KTG would say that Barroso, Van Rompuy & Co deserve to win the prize for a single reason: Living peacefully in their bubbles while many European Citizens, especially those in the South, live in conditions that violate the EU human rights standards and conventions.

In Greece and Portugal, in Spain and Ireland in the North, where social cohesion is breaking apart, the social welfare is collapsing, the needy cannot cover basic needs and the poor with less than 6,000 euro annual income get taxed. But that’s history on the making and ‘social peace’ has nothing to do with the Nobel Prize standards.

“The Nobel Peace Prize Committee announces its 2012 winner on Friday with prize watchers favouring dissidents from Russia and Belarus or religious leaders working on Muslim-Christian reconciliation.

“It was a unanimous decision and it was not particularly complicated,” Thorbjoern Jagland, the head of the selection committee, told the Aftenposten newspaper.

Jagland said that the winner, decided several weeks ago, is generally known to the public and the decision could generate some controversy.

“I expect that there will be some debate, we hope there will be,” Jagland told broadcaster TV2.

The committee received 231 nominations this year, including 43 organisations. It usually narrows the list to between 25 and 35 names at its first meeting to weigh candidates.

Other betting sites favoured Afghan women’s rights leader Sima Samar.” (Full article Here)

I just heard a weird dry sound. It must have come from the bones of Alfred Nobel as he is turning into his grave.

Do you agree with the decision?

Below the joint statement by Barroso and Van Rompuy:

“It is a tremendous honour for the European Union to be awarded the 2012 Nobel Peace

Prize.

This Prize is the strongest possible recognition of the deep political motives behind our

Union: the unique effort by ever more European states to overcome war and divisions and

to jointly shape a continent of peace and prosperity. It is a Prize not just for the project and

the institutions embodying a common interest, but for the 500 million citizens living in our

Union.

At its origins the European Union brought together nations emerging from the ruins of

devastating World Wars – which originated on this continent – and united them in a project

for peace. Over the last sixty years, the European Union has reunified a continent split by

the Cold War around values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality,

the rule of law and respect for human rights.

These are also the values that the European Union promotes in order to make the world a

better place for all. The European Union will continue to promote peace and security in the

countries close to us and in the world at large. We are proud that the European Union is the

world’s largest provider of development assistance and humanitarian aid and is at the

forefront of global efforts to fight climate change and promote global public goods.

This Nobel Peace Prize shows that in these difficult times the European Union remains an

inspiration for leaders and citizens all over the world.”

PS the next prize is an Oscar for Best Comedy ever…

  1. Emphatically NO! I do not agree with this sick, cynical, politically motivated?, choice. It sickens me to the core!

  2. It’s an insult to all those that believe in democracy!

  3. I look at the accompanying picture of Van Rompuy, and think “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”. We are in the cuckoo’s nest by the looks of things…

  4. 2nd biggest Nobel JOKE IN HISTORY.

#1 Nobel JOKE IN HISTORY was Obama.

Nobel Committee is now a Joke in itself.

  5. How can they say this has been given because of its promotion of unity and peace when Cyprus still remains the only divided and occupied nation in Europe .

  6. Quite frankly, words fail me. I can’t even articulate the contempt I have for this mockery of what was once considered a high honour.

  7. Northern Ireland? Just because they’ve stopped throwing bombs at each other doesn’t mean all is well in the camp…

  8. Basque, Catalonia, Greenland, South Ossetia, Cornwall… There are many europeans who consider themselves divided and occupied.

  9. It’s a close call but I think this may actually be more offensive than obama’s prize.

  10. I am so angry. The whole idea of this is unthinkable. I live in Greece and have seen what austerity measures are doing to the Greek people!

This must be the biggest joke of all time from the Nobel Peace Prize committee! (except I’m not laughing!)

  11. Isn’t this against the original idea and values of Alfred Nobel? I mean, the world is far from being an ideal place, but first the controversy with Obama getting the prize for literally nothing and now this? I’m not saying that EU or its people did nothing for peace, but you don’t have to delve further than last few years, to see all the conflicts that EU participated in. Not even mentioning the actual crisis and state of EU.

  12. I’m not saying that EU or its people did nothing for peace

The weapons industry in the EU grew from less than 50 billion in 1990 to over 2000 billion last year. What peace effort did you mean? But then, with that kind of a pedigree, I suppose it’s kind of fitting that they get a prize named after the guy who invented the main ingredient for things that go BOOM….

  13. This Nobel Peace Prize shows that in these difficult times the European Union remains an

inspiration for leaders and citizens all over the world.”

    “NOT“

Here you can vote who could collect the Nobel Prize on behalf of the EU.

How about all the people that committed suicide, because they could not afford to buy food and medicine and pay their bills. I am sure they will be happy to collect it on behalf of the EU.

What was the name of the man that shot himself outside the Greek Parliament building in Athens? He can collect it for the EU.

  14. @Aetos. You do indeed make a very good point. This whole things is just the boys patting each other on the back for a “job well done”, but done with total disregards of the effects it has on ordinary citizens of Europe, not just Greece.
As for the suicides in Greece, I think it would be a very good idea to have a commemoration wall for all these people, like the monuments in Flanders, the USA etc for the victims of war. Greece should have “wall of shame” with all the names of all the suicide victims carved in it, where people can come and remember those who died because they could not handle the peaceful efforts of the EU any longer. That wall should be facing the entrance of the Greek parliament so that politicians of all walks are constantly reminded of what bad policies are capable off doing to individuals as well as a people.

  15. Thank you Ephilant.

A memorial is also a good idea, so that mankind understands that we should not be selfish and GREEDY.

  16. Not just mankind needs to understand, politicians everywhere need to be confronted with the disastrous consequences of their policies, in the hope that they will finally learn to put the needs of people above the needs of predatory profit, and indeed the Greed and Selfishness that drives it.

  17. Of course I can’t agree with this ludicrous and farcical decision by the Nobel committee. How can it award the Nobel Prize for Peace to a political bloc that includes what were five of the top ten biggest arms exporters in the world (Germany 3rd, France 4th, the UK 5th, Italy 7th and Sweden 9th) between 2001 and 2012?!

Never mind the wars and resulting suffering that have been supported and actively propagated by EU countries all over the world for years now…

Both the brilliant Portuguese cartoon and your excellent article deriding this shameful decision deserve kudos – and I have taken the liberty of quoting both on my blog.

Shame on the Nobel committee! Shame on the EU for what it is doing to its own citizens! And keep up the great work.

    thank you Vittorio 🙂

  19. Considering NATO crimes in Libya and crimes against protesters in several EU countries, it makes me sick knowing how this band of thieves was rewarded with such a prestigious prize. The Nobel Peace Prize has been a joke for quite some time. Obama certainly didn’t do anything to deserve his, that’s for sure.

    Καλἡμέρα from Baltimore, USA.

  20. Julia, What Nato crimes in Libya are you talking about? I know that NATO, and Greece (thru the US Base in Souda) helped Libyans get rid of that murderous Khadaffi, but hadn’t heard about any crimes by NATO. Did something happen recently I missed? Do tell, please!
