Camping and hotel evacuated due to wild fire on Elafonisos

A camping site and one hotel have been evacuated when a big wild fire broke on the small island of Elafonisos between Peloponnese and Kythera on Saturday morning.

Evacuees have been ordered to go to the port, media reported.

However, an eyewitness said they were ordered to to go the beach and not to the port as the area was at fire risk due to the strong winds.

The fire reportedly started between 5 and 6 o’ clock in the morning in the landfill of the island and quickly spread in the surrounding area of low vegetation.

21 firefighters and two hiking teams are operating on Elafonnissos with seven vehicles, while another seven aerial means are on duty.

The deputy governor of Lakonia, Adamantia Tzanetea, said the camping and the hotel were evacuated for purely preventive reasons.

A woman who was trapped in a cave was rescued, Tzanetea added.

KTG understands that nobody has been harmed by the wild fire.

Elafonisos is a small Greek island between the Peloponnese and the island of Kythera.

Greek authorities have warned of extremely high risk of fires (Alert Status/Category 5) for Saturday, August 10, 2019 due to soaring temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius, dryness and powerful winds. The area of Kythera/Elafonisos is among the areas of extreme high risk.
