Have you been thinking all of the time that the symbol of social media Twitter is a “chirping bird” tweeting 140-characters long? Well, I have bad news for you. You have been wrong all of the time. Then according to conservative Nea Dimokratia, the fluffy Twitter bird has allegedly some connection with the Holy Spirit in form of a dove. Or something like that… a connotation I probably lack the intellectual, spiritual and religious skills to follow.
Lukas 3:22 The Baptism of Jesus
He was praying, heaven was opened, 22and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
A faithful ND candidate apparently got offended by a placard uploaded by Syriza announcing a Twitter chat with party leader Alexis Tsipras and issued a long statement running storm against the left-wing atheists.
The candidate, Konstantinos Cholevas, made the weirdest connotation linking the blue Twitter bird, the white dove as religious symbol of Holy Spirit and the Epiphany celebration last week where Tsipras let a dove fly away.
In his statement Cholevas noticed that he was unpleasantly surprised to see on “Internet that Mr. Tsipras and his aidees equated the Holy Spirit with twitter.
“The President of SYRIZA was in Piraeus during the celebration of the Epiphany and he was given the opportunity to hold the white dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Holy Trinity.
…. He took this opportunity given to him and turned into party poster to inform fans that he will hold a chat on Twitter.
In this poster, there is one very disrespectful equation of the dove as symbol of the Holy Spirit with the symbol of Twitter.
As Christian Orthodox and Greek citizen I protest for this act which demonstrates the lack of sensitivity and respect from the side of Mr. Tsipras to the Orthodox Faith and Tradition of our people.”
The candidate made also a reference to Prime Minister Antonis Samaras who festively announced during a elections campaign meeting on Monday that
“As long as Nea Dimokratia is in power we will never take down the icons of Jesus and the Saints from the walls of public buildings like Hospitals, Schools etc as it is the wish of Syriza.”
While in SYRIZA still wonder about the icons-claim of the Greek PM, some atheists puzzle over pious hunters shooting down grey pigeons but saving white doves.
At the same time, we can always claim, that when no rational arguments are around, there is always the religious sentiment that conservative and colorblind politicians can use against their opponents.
No, French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo would have no chance to be published in Greece. Oh wait, PM Samaras joined the world leaders in Paris on Sunday…
PS the Twitter bird is blue, not white….
