UPD Turkish Coast Guard threatened to arrest fisherman sailing in Greek territorial waters (video)

A patrol boat of the Turkish Coast Guard patrol boat threatened to arrest a Greek fisherman sailing in Greek terrirotail waters off the islands of Oinousses near Chios. Only the intervention of a gunboat of the Greek Navy managed to avert a real escalation between the two countries. Turkey has been excessively violating air space and territorial water in days and thus despite the Greek Easter, where according to a mutually signed Memorandum both countries are supposed to respect each other’s holidays.

The incident started at around 1 o’c clock noon of Good Friday, when the  Turkish coast guard vessel approached the Greek fishing boat that was fishing in Greek terrirotrial waters very close to the island of Oinousses.

Initially, the Turkish Patrol told the fisherman to leave the area claiming “it was Turkish territorial waters.” When the fisherman refused to obey, the Turkish Coast Guard crew threatened to arrest him.

As the Greek Coast Guard was not able to diffuse the tension, gunboat “Krataios” move to the area that asked the TCG to leave. The TCG crew refused to go away, but after negotiations and arguing that lasted until 4 pm, the TCG vessel finally moved away.

UPDATE

Speaking to news website NewsIt.gr, fisherman Stefanios Dimidis said that the boat was 1.5 nautical mile off Oinousses shore when the Turkish Coast Guard approached them and asked  them twice to move away. Stafanios, his father and 4 crew members were on the boat.

“They approached us, took position in front of us and stopped us. They wanted to come to my boat, I don’t know. I don’t know what to say. I don’t know what they wanted. We called the Greek Coast guard and then the Navy came,” Dimidis said telling how the whole story developed.

“First a Greek Coast Guard vessel came and did some movements to have to Turkish vessel go away but this would not go away.  Then they called for the Navy that told them to have the TCG go away. It went. We stayed at the same point and then the Turks came back. I don’t know what they wanted. Then the Navy came and the TCG went away again. We packed our things and went too.”

“In a way they wanted to arrest me. If we had guns, we would have fired at them. The man from the Navy told me to remain calm. The Navy came very quickly, Thank God, they are patrolling nearby. We were within our own territorial waters and they asked us to move away. Turks keep coming in. Yesterday, a similar incident took place.”

According to Dimidis, the incident was over when he moved away from the spot.

At some point, the Turkish officials urged the fishermen to follow the Turkish vessel , using a sign language.Greeks consider the incident as “very serious.”

Almost at the same time with the incident in the sea, an aircraft type CN-235 of the Turkish Navy performed 4 low flights of 200-700 ft (70 230 m) over the Oinousses, that is: over Greek territory.

  1. Heil Nazi Erdogun, Heil Holocaustoser Atatürk and thanks to Adolf Märklin for sleeking the balls of the power-crazed two cocked monster-scum; time to bring Böhmermann live on ERT, every evening

  2. It was a serious error for Greece to collaborate with Turkey in abusing the human rights of refugees. It was obvious from the very start that Turkey would use the opportunity to abuse the rights of Greeks and challenge Greek territorial sovereignty.
Of course, the rest of Europe couldn’t give a fuck about Greece, so why would they care?

    • I’m not sure Greece had any say in the matter, Guest. We only have pretend sovereignty these days.

    • For families and people who are rooted in both countries this is good and if the rest goes to Europe it’s even better, no Turks left over for war with Greece.
