Attica fire: More than 20 dead, among them two little girls

The number of dead and injured in the hazardous fire in East Attica increases by each passing hour. The bodies of six people were found on a hill in the village of Mati late on Monday.

The bodies of two little girls were found near the entrance door, the bodies of two women in the house yard and those of two men nearby.

Government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said at 3:oo a.m. that the number of dead is more than 20.

There is fear that the number of dead will increase by the day light.

The number of injured is 88, among them also 16 children.

Eleven of them are intubated in the intensive care units in hospitals in Athens.

Mayor of Rafina Vaggelis Bournous said in the early morning hours of Tuesday, that there are a lot of people still missing.

Frigate ELLI of the Greek Navy that was deployed to the area by order of the Defense Ministry has rescued 72 people from the sea. “Some of them were even 4 nautical miles off the coast,” state ERT TV reported.

The Coast Guard has reportedly rescued up to 150 people from the sea. The Search & Rescue operation as well as the transport of people trapped along the coast.

When the inferno came rushing from the mountain, many people sought refuge into the sea, when the blaze reached the coast and they were trapped.

The fire is still raging, fire fighters continue their work.

The only positive thing is that the gusty wind has flawed up.
